Its already been a very busy last few months college kind of consumed me for awhile along with that I had as always my very cherished friend staying with me this December. We did spend alot of time watching alot of older shows as none of us really watch anything new. Here is a brief in review of what I especially enjoyed this winter season. I dont actually have any new years revolutions maybe I'll work on more comics or atleast make more progress in programming (atleast finish the first area of my game I think). Anyways its time to get started. Most of these are titles I bought on VHS or DVD.
First up is You're under Arrest! 4 episode OVA.
This OVA has a TV broadcast anime afterwards but I hated the TV broadcast this anime is a motorhead's dream with a focus on car chase action and comedic character drama. It's about a motorhead bike driver transfering to a new police station with her new rather strict partner whose also a motorhead. Its very homey and silly as a anime and its absolutely gorgeous. The cars and bikes are beautifully detailed. Its also known for that eto eh bleh gif. It's definitely one of those animes that really reflects on that anime bubble during the time with its detail and spectacle to look at. Its really a shame we dont get cute little OVAs like this anymore. Its TV budget broadcast anime that continues where the OVA left off does not come off as sweet and full of heart and is more of a cop comedy anime. The OVA is a good perfect little package as is and I appreciate that! The stakes are so car. its great. You can watch it for free on youtube for some reason but I found this through a goodwill purchase.
Second is Dirty Pair FLASH.
This is the Dirty Pair reboot released as 3 dvds each containing a "mission". (Direct to DVD release). Dirty pair is about a pair of space enforcers known as the lovely angels but are mostly called the dirty pair due to the insane amount of distruction that follows them wherever we go. This is very much a couple of failgirls who spend alot of time arguing its really funny. While it sounds like a sex comedy it is for the most part a entirely normal comedy. 16 total episodes which is a decent and delightful length the first two missions are very well written with perfectly balanced mystery and comedy while the third mission is more of a collection of episodes than anything with an attempt at a big bang finale. The last third is not as strong but I do believe the first 2/3rds are strong enough to make it worth watching. Also has some bisexuality/yurious things happening there its awesome.
Tenchi Universe + Techni Forever
Having to include both here but you can just watch Tenchi forever if you only want to watch the insane french art film that is tenchi forever and dont have much interest in the anime's love triangle and fucking around whimsy it has. Tenchi universe is about having like 6 alien girls crashing in a highschool boy's backyard where he lives with his dad and grandpa who is a shinto priest. The anime is mostly about a guy hanging out platonically with a bunch of cute girls its quite cute he is very much not romantically oriented and it really doesnt deserve to be lumped in with harem anime. Tenchi universe is about hanging around for 20ish episodes before it locks in goes crazy and ends with a bang. Techni forever the second Tenchi universe movie gets a mention as its the stronger of the two movies and genuinely movies that ruined my life but also wrap up this part of the Techni franchise incredibly well as it is an incredibly heart wrenching and tense movie. It is such a slow decent into heartbreak its very quiet compared to the rest of the franchise and very deliberate its tone suits itself well. I do not suggest watching much else of the Tenchi franchise Muyo is kind of a everyone is related nightmare and I know it gets much worse the newer entries are which is just unfortunate because its rather cute.
Venus Wars
Venus wars doesnt particularly have a main character so explaining this is rather odd. It is a movie about well venus and the war between the two countries on the planet. The perspective shifts between a reporter and a rag-tag collection of racers. This movie has a very nice tone when it comes to war and isn't the strongest it is still a really nice watch. Its hard to really explain this movie in easy terms while it is somewhat about racing it is mostly about how the world is falling apart around the youth living in the city currently being occupied by a opposing military. This movie was one of the last works of the guy who designed the original Gundam robots and was a box office failure that caused his retirement.
Patlabor Policeforce the Movie
This movie I also bought as a goodwill find. This movie actually has Lupin III ties as part of its premise is actually retooled from the directors rejected Lupin III pitch and you can tell where some instances of this movies were meant to be a Lupin movie. Its quite slow in some sections and it is a genuinely interesting mystery to unfold. Patlabor is about mechs called labors mysteriously starting to go AWOL. The scientist who designed the programs for the labors has mysteriously died before the labors have started to go awry with the underdog police section trying to solve the case. Ends with a big ol mech fight it rules.
I hope you enjoyed the suggestions! email me if you end up liking any of it I love to hear your thoughts!!!
